Homicide investigators conduct initial and follow-up
investigation with local police detectives. During the
trial stage, they may bring homicide cases before the Grand Jury and testify or assist at pre-trial court proceedings prior to a plea or trial. Homicide investigators work closely with the Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
The unit's Assistant Prosecutors handle court hearings, from the arraignment to Grand Jury presentation through pre-trial hearings to trial, if necessary. The attorneys work with investigators to draft criminal complaints, search warrants and other legal documents necessary to advance the investigation and secure evidence. Unit secretaries handle administrative functions, oversee record keeping and storage and transcribe witness and defendant statements.
In 2010, the Homicide Unit in conjunction with local police departments investigated a total of 50 homicides. Thirty-nine were committed in the city of Camden. The remaining homicides occurred within the following municipalities: one in Audubon Park, one in Gloucester Township, two in Lindenwold, one in Lawnside, five in Pennsauken and one in Winslow.
